CV LIES AND CRIMINAL CHECKS

One in three new hires fail at work according to CIPD magazine Personnel Today. What’s going wrong? This article shares a few more vital statistics identifying a significant issue affecting anyone hiring permanent, part time or sub-contracted support staff. Other surveys of the employment market by HR Review show a startling decline in CV accuracy and Linkedin biographies.

Bad leavers fired by employers almost never disclose past conflicts or disciplinaries. Such moves are framed with positive descriptions to develop new skills, improve pay or seek extra benefits. Past employers will rarely describe real reasons for dismissal in fear of a discrimination claim.

28% of job seekers anonymously admit to changing dates to hide an employment gap. 93% of those who lied were not caught and almost half secured interviews. 55% enhance their past job roles to meet advertised requirements, fabricating achievements and overstating their scope of work and remuneration. The results are often found during probationary periods when damage within teams, clients and suppliers may be too late to recover. 

My own professionally certified training in enhanced personnel background security checking has identified convicted criminals with unspent convictions obtaining senior positions of responsibility as managers and contractors. In one case an individual had been given a 5 year prison sentence for a £2 million fraud and a ten year ban from Company Directorships. His career included financial and business consultancy for charities and government bodies.

What does a basic criminal background record check involve? The UK Gov Disclosure and Barring Service now gives online applicants a same day report emailed to applicants and employers showing unspent criminal records and police records of cautions, reprimands and warnings for just £21.50. Cautions may include any offence not taken to court due to insufficient evidence. That may include battery, stalking, theft, drug and drink related offences.
