Shoreham Port garners regional acclaim for sustainability
We are pleased to announce that Shoreham Port has been named amongst the best in the local business community after scooping the ‘Sustainable Business’ award at the 2023 Adur & Worthing Business Awards.
The 15th annual event celebrates business excellence in the Adur and Worthing area and the diversity of the local economy, featuring 19 award categories that acknowledge successes and achievements spanning various industries. The awards honour organisations that demonstrate exceptional growth, innovation, and outstanding contributions to their community.
Celebrating a decade of EcoPort certification this year, at Shoreham Port we continue to make significant strides in our environmental performance. In the last 12 months, we have implemented an ambitious carbon reduction strategy, with the adoption of HVO fuel in our Non-Road-Mobile-Machinery and marine vessels, resulting in an 80-90% CO2 emissions reduction in these areas. Our electric vehicle fleet has also grown, removing a further 4 tonnes of CO2 annually. Elsewhere at the Port we launched a waste wood recycling project and secured £1.3 million for the modernisation of fishing infrastructure. Initiatives like net recycling for fishers, line recycling for anglers and the opening of Port Kitchen, which achieved a Green Tourism gold accreditation, reflect our strong commitment to sustainability across the diverse areas of our organisation. Earlier in 2023 we held our third annual Sustainability Week, drawing together communities and businesses to collaborate on reducing emissions and improving local air quality.
Our achievement of the ‘Sustainable Business’ accolade embodies a passionate commitment to sustainability in Sussex and in the broader maritime sector. As Trusted Custodians, we challenge ourselves to think sustainably and ensure we hand the Port over to future generations better than we found it, embedding this agenda throughout the Port at every level.
Lydia Harvey, Sustainability Manager at Shoreham Port said “We are delighted to be regionally recognised for our sustainability initiatives at this year’s Adur & Worthing Business Awards. I am thrilled my colleagues could receive the award on my behalf.”
Lydia continued “This recognition underscores our dedication to ongoing improvement across all Port operations, holding ourselves accountable to high environmental standards, and acknowledging the challenges we face as a commercial port. It serves as a testament to our diligent focus on environmental responsibility and sustainable practices, reaffirming our commitment to fostering a cleaner and more sustainable future for our industry and the communities we serve.”
